Bergen Point sits at the southern tip of the Bayonne peninsula, where Newark Bay meets the Kill Van Kull and the Bayonne Bridge crosses to Staten Island. It is the oldest settled part of the city, and that single fact drives most of what we deal with here. Clearview works Bergen Point out of our office on West 31st Street, a few minutes up Broadway.

There was a ferry running from Bergen Point to Staten Island in the late 1600s, and by the late 1700s this was a landing on the route between New York and Philadelphia. It was later developed as a resort. The upshot is a housing stock that predates most of the rest of the city, and pre-1900 construction has a specific set of weaknesses:
That last point matters more than people expect. In a modern house, fire blocking interrupts the wall cavities. In a balloon-framed Victorian, it does not — which is why a Bergen Point mouse complaint that starts in the kitchen so often ends up being a noise complaint in the attic. See rat and mice control for how we handle that, and termite control and inspections for the wood-contact side.
Bergen Point is close to surrounded. Newark Bay is to the west, the Kill Van Kull to the south, and the shipping channel keeps the air damp well past the point where inland yards have dried out. Salt marsh mosquitoes arrive on the tide, and the container breeders hatch in whatever holds rainwater in a small back yard.
Practically, this corner of the city gets the longest mosquito season in Bayonne and the heaviest evening pressure along the waterfront walkway. Treatment here has to be a seasonal program, not one visit — the detail is on our mosquito control page.
The damp also shows up indoors. Old basements this close to the water rarely dry out, and that sustains the sowbugs, silverfish and Oriental roaches that residents tend to write off as unavoidable. They are not unavoidable; they are a moisture problem with an insect symptom.
Two pieces of infrastructure shape this neighborhood. The Bayonne Bridge lands here, carrying traffic to and from Staten Island. And the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail terminates at the Eighth Street station, which opened in January 2011 and put a direct commuter link into Jersey City and Hoboken at the bottom of the peninsula.
That movement matters for exactly one pest. Bed bugs travel on people and belongings, and a neighborhood with a commuter terminus, heavy rental turnover and a lot of subdivided older houses gives them more opportunity than a quiet block further north. If you are dealing with one, our bed bug inspection and treatment page covers what to expect, including how it works when the building has several units.
Collins Park, the waterfront walkway and the connection toward the RiverWalk form a continuous green edge along the water. Animals use it as a corridor and then look for somewhere dry to den — which, in Bergen Point, means a hundred-and-twenty-year-old roofline with a soffit return that has been open since before anyone noticed.
Raccoons and squirrels are the two we are called for most in this part of the city. Groundhogs take advantage of the older retaining walls and porch voids. We cover the whole range on our Bayonne wildlife removal page, with the detail on raccoons in attics and chimneys and squirrels in the roofline separately.
One local note: the older the roof structure, the more likely the entry point is a repair job rather than a screen. We quote the exclusion honestly and tell you which parts are structural.
The former Texaco site at the southern end has been redeveloped, most visibly as the 1888 Studios film campus. Large-scale excavation does one predictable thing to a dense residential neighborhood nearby: it displaces established rat colonies into the surrounding blocks. If rats appeared in your yard around the time ground broke somewhere within a few streets, those two facts are usually related — and the answer is sealing your own building rather than waiting for the site to finish.
Ranked by how often the phone rings in this part of the city:
If you run a business on the southern end of Broadway, the scheduling and documentation side is on our commercial pest control page.
All of it. Bayonne is a narrow peninsula and Bergen Point is a short drive down Broadway from our office on West 31st Street. There is no part of ZIP code 07002 we do not work.
No. Older buildings need more exclusion work, not different exclusion work. We seal what can be sealed and tell you plainly which openings are a repair job rather than a mesh-and-sealant job, so you can plan the cost.
Water on three sides. Salt marsh mosquitoes come in off the bay and the Kill Van Kull, and the humidity keeps resting sites viable longer. Barrier treatment on shaded vegetation does the work that yard fogging does not.
Get a wood-destroying insect inspection, and have someone look at where the porch framing meets the ground and where the sill sits on the foundation. Those two details account for most of the termite findings we write up in this neighborhood.
We can treat your unit, and we will tell you honestly if the evidence points to the rest of the building. For roaches and bed bugs especially, we would rather approach the owner and treat the whole building than have you pay for something that gets reinfested.
Same services, different emphasis. Older construction means more exclusion and more termite work; the waterfront means a longer mosquito season. Everything else we do across the city applies here too — see pest control in Bayonne.
